While they’re similar, braces and Invisalign work slightly differently. Here’s how.
How Do Braces Work?
Braces work by using a series of brackets and wires to realign teeth with the following issues:
- Crowded
- Rotated
- Gapped
- Crooked
The brackets are glued directly on your teeth and threaded with a wire that gradually pulls your teeth into position. Depending on the type of braces you have, your provider might also use elastic bands or power chains for extra support.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Clear aligners, known by brand names like Invisalign and ClearCorrect, work differently from braces.
Your provider will send you a series of slightly different clear trays, which you can remove to eat and brush your teeth. After wearing one tray for a few weeks, you’ll switch to the next tray in the set.
They’re more comfortable and convenient than braces because they don’t have wires that can poke your cheeks and gums. As long as you wear them for most of the day, they’ll be as effective as traditional braces.
What’s the Difference Between Invisalign and Clear Retainers?
Clear retainers and Invisalign trays may look similar, but they work differently. Invisalign is the alignment treatment that gradually moves your teeth into the correct position.
Whether you wear braces or Invisalign, you can choose clear retainers as a post-treatment alternative to plastic Hawley retainers. These retainers stop your teeth from shifting after your braces are taken off.
Is Invisalign Better Than Braces?
While the two are equally effective, here are a few reasons why many patients prefer clear aligners to regular braces:
- Appearance: While most braces are visible, Invisalign seamlessly blends into your smile. They’re almost entirely invisible, so no one will know they’re in until you have to remove them.
- Treatment timeline: You can complete Invisalign treatment in about a year or even shorter, depending on how much you need to correct. Braces can take several years of adjustment.
- Comfort: Patients report that Invisalign is more comfortable than conventional braces because it prevents irritation of the cheeks and lips.
- Convenience: You can remove Invisalign trays, making it easier to eat, drink and keep your teeth clean. Braces are glued onto your teeth until the orthodontist removes them.
- Effectiveness: Invisalign and braces are equally effective in most cases. That said, braces are often more effective for severe cases of misalignment.
Which One Is Right for You?
While both can correct mild cases, it’s important to consult with a trusted dentist who can advise you on your best options.
