What Makes a Filling Cosmetic?

We want you to understand that there is no difference between a cosmetic filling and a regular filling with regards to quality, appearance, or price at our office. We give our patients the very best every time! Unfortunately, insurance companies draw a distinction:

Regular Filling: A filling due to tooth decay.

Cosmetic Filling (Elective Filling): Choosing to get a filling to improve the appearance of your smile.

*Insurance providers usually cover the replacement of amalgam fillings that are beginning to fail. We do not do amalgam (silver) fillings in our office. Any filling you receive at our office will be a composite (white) filling.

What would be some reasons a person might elect to get cosmetic fillings?

  • Replacing amalgam (silver) fillings with composite (white) fillings because of aesthetic reasons.
  • Some people also choose to replace their amalgam fillings due to concerns about the mercury that is part of the amalgam mixture. Studies have been done that fall on both sides of this issue and an open conversation with your doctor is essential. Again, we do not do amalgam fillings in our office. Any filling you receive at our office will be a composite filling.
